Due
to climatic conditions here in Christchurch, New Zealand, we tend
to grow mainly temperate plants. They thrive in our comparatively
mild winters and wonderfully warm summers.
Sarracenia, Drosera, Dionaea, Cephalotus and Pinguicula are among
the genera that we grow. Generally we use conventional methods of
propagation. These include rhizome cuttings, leaf cuttings, natural
division and seed. We also have facilities for tissue
culture of various plants.
A
large commercial glasshouse is used to house our extensive collection.
The plants sit on staging units in permanent ponds to ensure adequate
water is available when really needed. We engage in hybridising
various species with each other in pursuit of producing clones of
superior quality. Recently we had wonderful success in terms of
flowering for a form of Sarracenia Catsbaei. This particular clone
gives rise to flowers over four inches across in most cases, similar
to Sarracenia Flava, but whose colours are a delightful orange.

We
are now unable to export any species of Carnivorous Plants to would
be collectors of our material.
New
Zealand itself is home to many indigenous species of Carnivorous
Plant. Fiordland, the Arthurs Pass and our National Parks contain
several species of Drosera, ranging from pygmy types through hibernacular
forming species, and even tuberous Sundews find themselves flourishing.
Utricularia (Bladderworts) grow in the tarns and bogs in the Southern
Alps and in the North Island.
Christchurch,
home of Carnivorous Plant Nurseries, is also proud to boast many
scenic attractions. The Port Hills, Hagley Park, and Travis Swamp
are all examples of our dynamic and changing land scape, all within
a few miles of each other. If you are in Christchurch, please be
sure to give us a call.
